Why You Need to Set Goals For Weight Loss

When you want to achieve something, the most important first step is to set goals which will help you to stay motivated until you've achieved your desired result. Natural weight loss is no different and setting goals for weight loss is an extremely important strategy in ensuring you reach your ultimate target weight.

The best way to work out your target weight is to calculate your body mass index or BMI. This will tell you what is a healthy weight range based on your height and age and therefore anything over that is what you need to lose.

There are lots of websites that offer free BMI calculators but if you want work it out for yourself, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in centimetres squared. A healthy weight range is considered to be a BMI of 20 to 24.9. Once you've worked out the figures, you'll know exactly how much weight you need to lose to achieve a healthy body weight. This is very important as having a BMI greater than 24.9 can increase your risk of many potentially fatal diseases.

The next step is to divide your long term target weight into smaller and more manageable goals so that you can achieve each one more easily. There have been several studies that show that if the goals we set ourselves are too big or will take too long to achieve, we become discouraged and quit. That's why it's so important to set yourself short term achievable goals or targets. I would suggest dividing the amount of weight you need to lose by ten so that you can set your first goal of achieving 10% of your total weight loss before moving on to the next goal. Losing 100 pounds or 50 kilos is a daunting prospect for most people but losing 10 pounds, or 5 kilos, is a much more achievable goal that can be realistically reached in the short term.

Losing this amount of weight can be achieved in a matter of weeks and achieving each individual goal will help you stay motivated in the long run. You'll be able to remind yourself as the weeks go by that you have achieved 10, 15, and 20% of your weight loss already. There's nothing like success to keep you motivated and by dividing a large seemingly unattainable goal into smaller quantities, you'll stay focused and motivated to ultimately achieve your desired target weight.

Finally, the further advantage of setting smaller goals is that if you have a period when your weight loss plateaus or if you break your diet, you'll be less likely to give up completely. You'll be able to see the bigger picture and remind yourself that you have come 50% of the way and the temporary problem has set you back only slightly.
